Troubleshooting : Motorola SURFboard Cable Modem

Motorola's SURFboard line of cable modems provides users with a fast and easy connection to the Internet. The connection is made by plugging a coaxial cable from a wall jack to the modem and running an Ethernet cable from the modem to the computer. Although these cable modems will work without problems on most occasions, there are times when you will need to troubleshoot your device. Most problems with the modem are common, however, and can be fixed without the need of a service technician.

Power Light Off

The SURFboard series of cable modems has several indicator lights on the front panel of the device that let you know the status of your Internet connection. The "Power" light indicator should glow green during normal operation. If the power light is off, make sure the power cord is securely connected to the modem and that it is plugged into a working power outlet. To ensure the power outlet is live, plug another device into the outlet and makesure it works.

If the "Standby" indicator light is lit, the modem is not connected to the Internet. Press the "Standby" button on the modem to connect to the Internet, which should turn on the "Power" indicator light.

No Internet Connection

When you cannot connect to the Internet, check and see if the "Standby" indicator is lit. When the "Standby" indicator is lit, you are not connected to the Internet. Press the "Standby" button to connect to the Internet.

Next, check whether you have cable TV reception, if you use the same service provider for your television and Internet. The channels should work as normal, and the picture should be clear. If you cannot access your regular cable television stations, the issue rests with your service provider. Contact them to resolve the problem.

Make sure the coaxial cable that runs from the wall outlet to the SURFboard cable modem is securely connected to both the outlet and the modem. Check for any damage to the cable, as that can affect your connection.

Finally, check that a USB or Ethernet cable is connected to both the modem and the computer. Without this connection, you will not be able to access the Internet.

Before Contacting Your Service Provider

If you are unable to solve the connection problem, call your service provider and see if the issue is on their end. Before calling your service provider, unplug the modem and plug it back into the power outlet. This will restart the cable modem. Restarting the modem could take from 5 to 30 minutes. Pay attention to the indicator lights when the modem restarts, as your service provider may ask you questions about them.
